Q:

I have horse shoe kidney disease for more than 20 years and recently I experienced burning pains while urinating, also suffer from difficulty in urination, the urine is cloudy, etc. Do all these indicate my kidneys are becoming worse, please help me!

A:

Horseshoe kidney is a congenital renal malformation. Under normal circumstances, we each have two separated kidneys. If the lower portion of the kidneys are connected during the fetal development. Usually this condition is not harmful to the body and about one third of children with horse shoe kidneys have no symptoms at all.

However if the child has developed horse shoe kidney, he is at higher risk to develop kidney diseases. If typical symptoms of kidney disease appear such as difficulty in urination, urinary pains, cloudy urine or even blood in urine, it often indicates complications of kidney disease and the most common causes are kidney stone and hydronephrosis.

Stones can form in the kidneys or bladder. If the stone is small in size, it can move in the kidneys and urinary tract and cause urinary pains, blood in urine, cloudy urine, nausea, vomiting, flank pains, etc. If the stone is too large, it may obstruct the urinary tract and block the normal urine flow. If so, patients will have difficulty in urination, frequent urinary tract infections, etc.

About 80% horse shoe kidney cases will develop hydronephrosis which can cause a series of urinary tract symptoms and even cause severe damages to kidney functions if not well treated.

As for how to relieve your pains and discomforts, the following are sone guidances. Antibiotics will be used to control and treat the urinary tract infections, prevent and treat kidney infections. For the kidney stone and hydronephrosis, conservative therapies with medications, physical therapies and lifestyle adjustments will first be used and then surgery may be needed if the condition is very serious.
