Q:

My wife is 49, she has this glomerulonephritis and is being treated by a specialist. However, for the past months she is having this blood in her urine. When she goes to the hospital she is just given antibiotics. What is the problem with her? Is it getting worse? She has hypertension but is manageable because she is taking medicines. By the way, she also has costochondritis and psoriasis.

A:

Glomerulonephritis is also called nephritis and it is inflammations in the kidneys. Blood in urine, protein in urine, swelling, high blood pressure are the common symptom of nephritis. Though blood in urine does not definitely means that her illness condition is getting worse, prompt and proper treatment should be sought to bring it well under control.

Blood in urine for glomerulonephritis patients is most likely caused by infections, that is why antibiotics drugs are prescribed by your doctors. Antibiotics are effective at controlling kidney infections and kidney inflammation, but it can not solve the root problem, that is why blood in urine often reoccur after the antibiotics are stopped.

Since your wife also has hypertension, it is very necessary for her to control her blood pressure within safe and stable levels. Well control of high blood pressure can significantly reduce potential damages to renal tissues, slow down illness progression and help control blood and protein in urine.

During the onset of blood in urine, your wife should avoid strenuous activities, have good rests, have light diets and foods such as apple, pear, black fungus, celery, watermelon, wax gourd, etc.

Her costochondritis and psoriasis have certain impact on her blood in urine, therefore it is necessary to seek early and effective treatment to bring costochondritis and psoriasis well under control.

The root cause of blood and protein leakage in urine is renal fibrosis, therefore to cure blood in urine for nephritis patients, effective treatment should aim at blocking further fibrosis, repairing damaged renal tissues and recovering renal functions. Clinical surveys have found that more than 90% glomerulonephritis patients can have good curative effects after receiving systemic and proper treatment, blood and protein in urine can disappear and the recurrent rate is low. But the key point is to seek proper treatment as early as possible before renal damages become to advanced to be reversed.
