Q:

I was told to have slightly elevated creatinine level. I am a diabetic and was diagnosed with lupus recently. The doctor is keeping a watch on it for now. Is the kidney insufficiency most likely from diabetes or an autoimmune condition?

A:

Hi, both diabetes and lupus can cause kidney problem. How long have you been diagnosed with Diabetes? How is your blood pressure control? What is your current creatinine level? And do you have albumin in urine? The information you offered is limited and I can not give accurate diagnosis and suggestions. Do you have your test reports? You can send to kidneycares@hotmail.com. And our experts will help you analyse the test reports and then give more practical suggestions.

High creatinine level is a dominant index used to diagnose kidney disease. However, kidney insufficiency is not the only cause for elevated creatinine level. There are many other factors like improper diet, creatine supplement and medicines which also can cause fluctuation of serum creatinine. Therefore, bringing these factors into consideration is also necessary.

Besides, in cases of kidney insufficiency, elevated creatinine level is also accompanied by many other symptoms like high blood pressure, bubbles in urine, fatigue, swelling, frequent urination at night and poor appetite and so on. With progression of illness condition, these symptoms will become more and more serious. Therefore, timely and effective treatment is of great importance for kidney disease patients.

Lastly, although your creatinine level is slightly elevated, you need to attach enough more importance for it. For people with kidney insufficiency, creatinine level usually does not increase until a half of kidney function is impaired. Therefore, if your high creatinine level occurs due to kidney problem, it is important for you to protect residual kidney function as quickly as possible; otherwise, your creatinine level will keep increasing and dialysis will be finally needed.
