Q:

My consultant wants to treat my frequently relapsing Nephrotic Syndrome with a combination of prednisolone and mycophenolate mofetil. Would you please give me some introduction about Mycophenolate mofetil?

A:

Nephrotic Syndrome is an abnormal medical condition that can cause large amounts of protein in urine. It relapses easily and the managemet of it still remains a challenge for nephrologists. Prednisone is the most commonly used medicine in Nephrotic Syndrome and recently, mycophenolate mofetil is also applied to deal with this kidney problem.

The brand name of mycophenolate mofetil is cellcept which is an immunosuppressant and is commonly used to prevent the rejection of new organs following a transplant operation. For Nephrotic Syndrome patients, they are prescribed with mycophenolate mofetil, as this medicine can help to block inflammation in their body. Inflammation occurs when there are immune complexes in the body and it is the major cause of kidney damages in Nephrotic Syndrome.

Long-term taking of mycophenolate mofetil will cause many side effects like fever, chills, body aches, chest pain, problems with vision, memory problems, weakness in legs, bleeding, trouble breathing and headache and nausea and so on. When these discomforts occur, patient needs to stop using this medicine and call doctor at once.

Mycophenolate mofetil helps to prevent relapse of Nephrotic Syndrome, but it is not a real solution. You know inflammation occurs because of immune complexes in kidney. If these deposition are not removed effectively, inflammation occurs again sooner or later. Here I recommend Immunotherapy which can help to clear immune complexes away from the kidney. What’s more, it cause no side effects during the whole treatment process.
