Q:

Hi, can you please give you some suggestions? I did a routine blood test one week agao and my GP told me I had high creatinine, so referred me to a Nephrologist who said I had lost 50% of my kidney function This surprised me and scared me, as I do feel sick at all. Even so, I’d like to know what the future holds and can I keep going with this sort of loss? I am confused and very worried.

A:

Hi, please do not worry. I’d like to give you some guidance and hope it is helpful for you.

Firstly, you must know clearly kidney disease will progress to kidney failure gradually without timely and effective treatment. And at that time, dialysis or kidney transplant will be needed to sustain your life.

High creatinine level is an important index used to reflect how well the kidney function. It is one of the wastes need to be discharged by our kidney, so high creatinine level means kidney function has been affected and can not help to discharge wastes timely and effectively. Damaged kidneys not only fail to discharge creatinine, but also other wastes. Therefore, high creatinine level also means there are high levels of toxins in blood. Usually, the higher the creatinine level, the severer the illness condition and the higher the toxin level in blood.

As of now, you only have 50% kidney function and if you can stop your kidney disease from progressing, you can keep going with this sort of loss. To achieve this purpose, a comprehensive treatment is needed and it mainly include the following aspects:

1. Bring all the symptoms under control

Symptoms like high blood pressure, proteinuria and anemia can accelerate kidney disease to kidney failure, so it is necessary to control these symptoms tightly.

2. Repair injured kidney intrinsic cells and protect residual kidney tissues

Kidney disease, mainly refers to Chronic Kidney Disease, can not be cured at all, so many patients mistake kidney damages can not be reversed. In fact, some injured kidney intrinsic cells can be repaired. Kidney cells also have self-repairing ability, but when the damage is beyond their ability, they will become necrotic. Therefore, for these kidney cells which are damaged mild, they can recover by activating and offering them nutritions. You can try Chinese medicines like micro-Chinese medicine which can help you repair these injured kidney cells and protect ther residual kidney tissues from being damaged.

3. Change your diet

Change your diet and try to eat less salt. As for the protein, you need to limit the intake of it, and also 60% of protein you eat everyday should be high quality protein which can be found in fish, lean meat, egg white and milk. Besides, how about your potassium level and phosphorus level. If your lab tests show high potassium and phosphorus level in blood, remember to avoid foods high in potassium or phosphorus like banana and spinage.

This is all the suggestion I give you. If there is anything unclear, please feel free to leave me message.
