Will Sickness Raise Serum Creatinine

2013-01-03 04:33

Q:

I have seen my nephrologist and creatinine has risen from 3.2 to 4.1, hemoglobin dropped over a point and blood sat reduced from 24 to 7. Before this I have had a lung infection (I have chronic lung problem) and was on Cipro for 10 days. The doctor said that it is this infection that has raised my creatinine. Is this true? My GFR has dropped from 24 to 11 within 4 months. Has anyone else experienced this? Eager to hear your response.

A:

Infections are risk factors that can cause rapid deterioration of kidney damage. Progression of chronic kidney disease is characterized by gradual inflammatory damage to renal intrinsic cells. Any infection, such as upper respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, etc, can activate inflammatory damage to the kidneys and aggravate the general condition in short periods of time.

In such situation, the patients may experience an obvious elevation of creatinine from their previous baseline, and acute kidney function decline on a chronic kidney failure basis. When patients with kidney disease get an infection even a simple cold, remember never to apply medicines on your own because some medicines may worsen kidney condition.

As of now, control the infection as prescribed by doctors and maintain good nutrition status to reduce any further risk of infection. Take good care of yourself and there maybe chances of improving kidney condition to some degree.
