Q:

My son has Nephrotic Syndrome. I need to know please why he experience shortness of breath when he is sleeping? He is on prednisone 5mg when he is sick. Is there any natural remedy?

A:

In cases of Nephrotic Syndrome, the following several conditions can cause shortness of breath when sleeping:

1. Metabolic acidosis: A healthy kidney can help us keep balance of acid-base and when kidney function is impaired, metabolic acidosis will be caused. Nephrotic Syndrome is an serious illness condition characterized by massive proteinuria, edema, hypoalbuminemia and hyperlipidemia. With the progression of Nephrotic Syndrome, kidney function become poorer and poorer. When metabolic acidosis is caused, respiratory system can be affected as well. For Nephrotic Syndrome patients, they will experience shortness of breath when their respiratory system is affected because of metabolic acidosis.

2. Fluid retention: fluid retention is one of the dominant symptoms of Nephrotic Syndrome and it usually occurs because of great loss of protein from urine. Without effective control, fluid retention becomes more and more serious and it may finally cause pleural effusion which always bring patients deep breath and shortness of breath. With pleural effusion, Nephrotic Syndrome patients will found it becomes hard for them to fall in sleep at night.

Nephrotic Syndrome will bring us more and more problems with the progression of it and if we want to avoid these bother some problems, we must repair kidney damages and stop it from developing. For your son, I recommend you Immunotherapy which combines western medicines and estern medicines and show great treatment effects in improving kidney condition. What is more, it causes no side effects, so it is more preferable for child with kidney problem.
