Q:

I was just recently diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy. My family is in shock and I am trying my best to cope with all that is happening right now. I have no ideal what do do as this was completely unexpected. When will it develop to kidney failure? If you have any advice on how to slow the disease progression, I would greatly appreciate it!

A:

According to clinical survey, about 15-20% patients with apparent onset IgA Nephropathy will develop end stage kidney failure within 10 years and 30-40% within 20 years. IgA Nephropathy is one of the major causes of kidney failure, but not everyone with IgA kidney problem will certainly suffer from end stage renal disease. With effective treatment and good nursing care, IgA Nephropathy progression can be stopped.

Right treatment: IgA Nephropathy is a kidney disorder marked by increasing IgA deposition in mesangial area. IgA deposition induce inflammation which damage our kidney tissues directly. Mostly, patients are prescribed with some oral medicines to block inflammation, which can help to avoid further kidney damages. These medicines are necessary, but they should not be all what patients can do. To stop IgA Nephropathy from progressing, patients also need to preventing the formation of new deposition and meanwhile remove IgA deposition in mesangial area. Otherwise, IgA Nephropathy relapses sooner or later. As long as there exist no deposition in kidney, no inflammation occurs and also no further kidney damages are caused.

Nursing care: A good nursing care is necessary for IgA Nephropathy patients and it includes good living habits and a well-plant diet. In daily life, IgA Nephropathy patients need to avoid staying up, drinking alcohol and smoking. Besides, if they already have developed these bad living habits and found it is hard to kick them, they can ask their doctors, family and friends for help. Also, try to avoid cold and infection which are the lading two aggravating factors. For an individual with IgA Nephropathy, a well-plant diet include low-protein diet, low-salt diet, high-vitamin diet and high-calcium diet.
