Will Dialysis Cause Fever?

2013-03-15 14:53

Q:

Patient: My father has regular dialysis and recently he runs a low grade fever. I’d like to know whether it is related with dialysis? And is it serious?

A:

Doctor: Fever is a common but dangerous condition during or after dialysis. And also it is reported to be life-threatening for patients undergoing dialysis.

The most common cause of fever in patients with renal failure and dialysis is infection. For hemodialysis patients, they are uniquely vulnerable to develop of healthcare-associated infections because of multiple factors including exposure to invasive devices, immunosuppression, the lack of physical barriers between patients in the outpatient hemodialysis environment, and frequent contact with healthcare workers during procedures and care. However, for peritoneal dialysis, because of its special dialysis procedure, peritonitis and different kinds of infection occur more easily. When dialysis causes infection, fever will occur. For fever in peritoneal dialysis, it is usually accompanied with stomach pain, nausea and vomiting symptoms. For your father, I suggest him to ask his doctor for help to deal with this problem.

Lastly, since infection is the major cause of fever, kidney failure patients who are undergoing dialysis need to prevent infection in advance, so as to avoid unnecessary problems.
