IgA Nephropathy (Berger’s disease) is the most common form of primary glomerulonephritis around the world and also one of the major causes of kidney failure. With different illness condition, IgA Nephropathy patients need to take different drugs and usually, the followings drugs are needed:
1. ACE inhibitors: ACE inhibitors are the preferred agents for lowering blood pressure decreasing proteinuria. Reports have demonstrated that ACE inhibitors are more effective than other antihypertensive drugs in slowing the progression of proteinuric renal disease, So they are highly recommended for IgA Nephropathy patients with hypertension or proteinuria symptom.
2. Angiotensin II receptor blockers can be adopted by IgA Nephropathy patients who can not tolerate ACE inhibitors.
3. Prednisone: Prednisone is a common drug in kidney disease with anti-inflammation and antianaphylaxis function. Prednisone shows quick and obvious treatment effects in kidney disease, but unfortunately long-term taking of this medicine will cause many side effects like chronic trouble sleeping, infection, increased hunger, blurred vision, eye pain, swelling, rapid weight gain, feeling short of breath and severe depression and so on.
4. Mycophenolate mofetil also can be used in IgA Nephropathy cases, but it is generally applied by patients with proteinuria symptom.
5. Fish oil: it is frequently used in patients with declining renal function.
6. Immunosuppressive therapy: Immunosuppressive therapy is helpful, but the optimal role of it in IgA Nephropathy is uncertain now.
7. Glucocorticoids: Clinic experiments show that serum creatinine level can be lowered effectively with glucocorticoids, cyclophosphamide and azathioprine.
IgA Nephropathy is an autoimmune disease and can be treated with different drugs which may bring patients different treatment effects. To have a better control about IgA Nephropathy, it is necessary for IgA Nephropathy patients need to have an exact diagnosis and good understanding about their illness condition.
