IgA Nephropathy. also known as Berger’s disease, is a primary kidney disorder that is characterized of deposition of IgA and other immune globulins in the mesangial area of the kidneys. Many patients like to eat chocolates so when they get this disease, they wonder whether chocolates are allowed or not.
The kidneys work to remove excess wastes and excess water out of our bloodstream. When they don’t function properly, these toxins may accumulate in the blood to make people very sick. Potassium can be found from many foods like fruits, vegetables and dried beans. If the kidneys are not functioning well and people continue eating high amounts of potassium, potassium can build up in blood and become very dangerous. High potassium can cause irregular heartbeats and even heart attacks. Chocolates actually contain rich potassium, as a 4 oz serving of chocolate contains 439 mg potassium.
Chocolates also contain high levels of phosphorus. Malfunctioning kidneys don’t function to remove phosphorus as effectively, so phosphorus can build up and pull calcium out of the bones to make your bones weaker. A 1.5 oz serving of chocolate contains 92 mg phosphorus which will be harmful for bones.
In addition to chocolates, other foods with high potassium and phosphorus should also be restricted from your diet. IgA Nephropathy sufferers need to balance their intake of proteins and avoid eating spicy, salted or greasy foods for their health.
