Although a diet cannot cure IgA Nephropathy, it can slow down its progression into kidney failure. Therefore, it is important for IgA Nephropathy patients to follow a proper diet. Well, what is a proper diet for IgA Nephropathy?
1. omega-3 fatty acid
omega-3 fatty acid has functions of reducing inflammation in kidneys so as to stop further kidney damage. Fish oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acid. IgA Nephropathy patients can eat relatively more fish and other foods with omega-3 fatty acid.
2. limit sodium intake
since many IgA Nephropathy patients are accompanied by high blood pressure and swelling. If they take excess sodium, hypertension and swelling may be worsened. Thus, the patients should limit salt intake to 2-3 grams per day.
3. vitamin E
vitamin E helps reduce protein in urine. Therefore, patients should eat foods with high vitamin E in their daily diet such as green leaf vegetables.
4. be careful with potassium intake
diseased kidneys cannot filter potassium and patients are more likely to suffer from hyperkalemia. Hence, patients should avoid some foods with high potassium like oranges, bananas, peaches, potatoes, nuts and lentils, etc. This is because high serum potassium level can affect the function of heart and even lead to serious heart failure.
5. avoid polluted food
people should avoid polluted food such as polluted water, crops, fowls, fish and eggs, etc. Eat more green food and organic food to prevent the disease from coming in through mouth.
