How to Treat FSGS Correctly

2012-11-18 09:21

To know clearly how to treat FSGS (Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis), it is necessary to know how does FSGS progress. As long as we stop FSGS from progressing, FSGS is stopped and also further kidney damages are avoided.

FSGS is the abbreviation of Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis referring to the scar tissue that forms in parts of the kidney called glomeruli. The glomeruli serve as filters and help to filter blood during which nutrition are kept and wastes are discharged. For people with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, some of the glomeruli are damaged partly. We know our cells have self-curative ability, and our renal cells also have this ability. For completely necrotic renal cells, it is impossible to revive them. However, for people with FSGS, their glomeruli are damaged partly and as long as we increase their self-curative ability, they can recover.

For FSGS patients, if they just leave their problem alone and receive no treatment, their glomeruli will be damaged more seriously and finally these glomeruli may die. When large amounts of glomeruli lose their function, renal filtration function decreases and kidney failure is formed. Therefore, the best method to treat FSGS is to repair damaged glomeruli. As long as damaged glomeruli are repaired, kidney function increases to some extent and also FSGS is stopped effectively.

FSGS is a medical term used to describe how kidney is damaged. The diagnosis of it needs renal biopsy which can help us know better about kidney problem. However, although renal biopsy is helpful, not everyone with kidney problem is suitable to do renal biopsy. Generally speaking, people with serious illness condition are not suitable to do renal biopsy, as their condition may become more serious because of renal biopsy.

FSGS progresses to kidney failure if we fail to stop it. Therefore, treating FSGS correctly is the only way for patients to avoid dialysis and kidney transplant.
