Is Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) a contraindication for kidney transplantation? FSGS is a common type of kidney disease, and also the dominant cause of Nephrotic Syndrome. When FSGS runs to kidney failure, dialysis or kidney transplant will be put into the consideration of the treatment. Kidney transplant is a medical surgery and it means a lot for people with completely failed kidney, because it is the only option for them to live without dialysis. However, because of the high recurrence rate, FSGS is mistaken for the contraindication of kidney transplantation.
According to clinical surgery, in primary FSGS, about 40% of cases will recur, many of which ultimately lead to allograft failure. Therefore, FSGS patients should be more cautions about kidney transplantation which is usually adopted by people with kidney failure. Patients begin to think about kidney transplant and are eager to find a kidney donor, when their kidneys are failed. However, some of them actually still have chance to avoid kidney transplantation. And for these whose kidney failure is caused by FSGS, they should know clearly whether kidney transplantation is really needed.
Usually, if FSGS patients still have urine output, they have chance to improve their kidney condition and avoid kidney transplant. Kidneys are responsible for producing urine. Patients have urine output, which means they have healthy kidney tissues and their kidneys still can help them filter some of their blood. In this case, medicines can go into the kidney to repair kidney damages along with the blood. Therefore, for FSGS patients who still have urine output, there is alternative treatment for them to deal with their kidney problem.
kidney transplantation is just one of the options for FSGS patients. And also because of its high recurrence rate of FSGS, kidney transplantation is not an ideal option for them at all. Therefore, instead of receiving kidney transplant, trying an alternative treatment for FSGS is very necessary.
