Diet Plan for Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis

Diet Plan for FSGSSome foods should not be included in diet plan for Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), as they may cause deterioration of kidney function. But for most of the FSGS patients, they generally know they need to low-protein and low-potassium diet, and do not know what foods should eat and should not eat in their realistic life. Here, we will list some foods that should be avoid by FSGS patients.

1. Some high-protein foods should be avoided by FSGS patients.

High-protein foods increase extra renal burden, which can accelerate FSGS to progress to kidney failure. So foods like bean, bean products, cheese, lean beef, roasted pumpkin, squash, watermelon seeds, chicken, fishlentils, pulses and peanuts should not be limited in their diet plan. Meanwhile, as our body needs protein to synthetize energy, patients can ingest some high quality to meet the physical demand. High quality protein can be find in fish, egg while, lean meat, milk and chicken, but please remember, do not eat too much these foods.

2. Low-potassium diet

High levels of potassium is harmful for our heart. Therefore, foods with high potassium should not be included in FSGS diet plan. High potassium foods include baked potato, raisins, lima beans, dried prunes, cooked spinach, tomato products, scanned sauce, winter squash, yogurt plain, skim milk, cooked beets, cooked brussel sprouts, raw banana, raw avocados, cantaloupe, melons, honeydew, orange juice, dried prunes and so on.

3. Low-phosphorus diet

Some FSGS patients may have high levels of phosphorus. In such a case, foods with high phosphorus should not be kicked from their diet plan. Common foods with high phosphorus include bran (rice and Oat), pumpkin seeds, squash seeds, watermelon seeds, sunflower seeds, toasted wheat germ, cheese, sesame seeds, tahini, nuts, roasted soybeans, flax seeds, bacon and so on. These foods are high in phosphorus, but not all the FSGS have high levels of phosphorus, for some patients, their phosphorus may be lower than the normal value and in such a case, they need to eat more these foods.

4. Limit fluid intake

FSGS is a leading cause of Nephrotic Syndrome which is marked by edema, hyperlipidemia, hypoproteinemia and proteinuria. For these FSGS patients who have serious edema, they should limit fluid intake during their diet, otherwise, edema will become more and more serious.
