What Are The Fruits Given To Dialysis PatientsWhat are fruits given to dialysis patients? Many patients on dialysis are quite aware of the popular fruits which are allowed and safe on dialysis. Here are some fruits which are safe and beneficial on dialysis.

1. Apples

Apples have compounds like polyphenols, flavonoids and catechins which have rich antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties. The studies prove that these compounds can decrease the risk of cancers. Patients on dialysis are predisposed to heart disease. Soluble fiber content in apple can decrease total cholesterol and bad cholesterol and decrease the risk of heart diseases. Insoluble fiber can help prevent constipation. Besides, its lower glycemic index makes it a good choice for patients on dialysis with diabetes.

2. Guava

Guava are rich in phenolic acids, flavonoids and have seven times the recommended range of vitamin C per day. In this way, guava is able to fight against any infections such as cold, flu and protect against even cancers. Many dialysis patients have issues of constipation. The rich insoluble dietary fiber in guava can resolve the issues of constipation. Well planned meals on dialysis which include guava as part of the meals can lower the bad cholesterol effectively.

3. Papaya

4. Watermelon

Watermelon can also be allowed in a dialysis diet. Some are told to avoid watermelon while some said it is acceptable in the dialysis diet. Can a dialysis patient eat watermelon- or not?

Yes, watermelon is acceptable in the dialysis diet. In fact, the fruit has low levels of potassium but we must control the portion size and fluid levels. Watermelon contains a lot of fluid. For this reason, patient may exceed their fluid goals if they consume watermelon in a large amount. For dialysis patients on fluid limitation, watermelon is limited to only one cup per day. For dialysis patients with interdialytic weight gain concern, watermelon should be counted as a replacement for fluids.

In summary, dialysis should eat fruits which are suitable for them, at the same time keeping an eye on the portion size.
