How to raise hemoglobin in dialysis patients? Hemoglobin is a kind of protein that takes charge of carrying oxygen to different parts of our boy and makes blood look red. It can be shorted as Hg or Hgb. Reference value for Hgb is 120-160g/L for male and 110-150g/L for female. Chronic Kidney Disease is an illness that can lead to decrease hemoglobin and with low levels of hemoglobin, they are easily to suffer from a group of discomforts like feeling tiredness, headache, dizziness, fatigue, lacking of concentration and so on. 1. Increase iron intake

Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, so deficiency of iron also plays a part for low hemoglobin in some cases. This is the reason why some dialysis patients find they receive no treatment effects in treating anemia, even if the content of erythropoietin (EPO) in their body has been increased. Examples of food with high levels of iron include beef, pork, chicken, clams and shrimp and so on.

2. Eat more foods with B-12 vitamin

Eat foods high in vitamin B-12 also helps to alleviate low hemoglobin, as vitamin B-12 is said to be able to help to make red blood cells in the body. To ingest more vitamin B-12, you can eat much more cereal. Also, we can take vitamin B-12 supplements if we can not achieve the goal through daily diet.

3. Get more vitamin C

Get more vitamin C will help to our body to absorb iron successfully. Therefore, taking vitamin C supplement and vitamin C foods like broccoli, tomato and red peppers are helpful for dialysis patients to increase their hemoglobin.

4. Herbs to increase hemoglobin

Some herbs like Nettle Leaf, Dong Quai Angelica and Withania have to been proven to be able to raise hemoglobin. Therefore, herbs also can be a method for dialysis patients to improve their hemoglobin, but please remember use these herbs under doctor’s direction, as improper usage may cause further deterioration of illness condition.

5. Blood transfusion

Blood transfusion is another way to raise hemoglobin, but it is only needed in severe cases.

There are different management methods for low hemoglobin and dialysis patients need to chose the right one according to their specific illness condition.
