2014-01-09 11:37

Dialysis is a replacement therapy for people with kidney failure. If the patients are adopted to it,they will live a fulfill life. However, some complications still can not be inevitable. Confusion is a common complaint for dialysis patients which can be contributed to the following causes.

Low blood glucose

Low blood glucose occurs when blood glucose drops below 70mg/dL.If you are a diabetic, decreased kidney function can make you more prone to low blood glucose.Hence, the dialysis patients experience confusion.

Disequilibrium syndrome

This is a very common and serious cause of confusion for dialysis patients. The cause of disequilibrium syndrome is slower transfer of urea from the brain tissue to the blood. In addition, rapid changes in serum electrolytes, especially in new patients also can contribute to the condition.

Autonomic dysfunction

Autonomic dysfunction occurs in over 50% of patients on maintenance dialysis and may be most important clinically by contributing to hypotension during dialysis. It is also an attributable factor of confusion for the patients.

Dehydration

Confusion can occur along with dehydration. One of important dialysis functions is to filter out extra fluid from body. However, if too much fluid is removed from body by dialysis treatment, it will lead to dehydration. The patients with the condition can experience diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and confusion.

The above are the major causes of confusion for dialysis patients. You can email to kidneycares@hotmail.com  for suggestions to manage the condition.
