Constipation in Dialysis Patient: Causes and ManagementI am miserable due to the constipation and dialysis. Yesterday, one patient left such a message on our website. Since constipation is one common problem, today, we are here to give out the causes and managements for constipation in dialysis patient.

Causes

For people on dialysis, their constipation is usually due to two factors:

One is diet restriction: Because dialysis can’t filter out potassium and phosphorus efficiently, people on dialysis are often suggested to avoid foods high in these two substances, like high-fiber foods. The low intake of these foods, along with fluid restrictions between dialysis session, is one cause for constipation in dialysis patient.

The other is the use of certain medications: It is another factor that links constipation with dialysis. Many medications such as diuretic and antihistamine that dialysis patients take can cause constipation.

Management

To treat constipation in dialysis, the best strategy is to develop a high-fiber diet, if necessary medications.

Eat more foods high in fiber

Generally, people on dialysis are required to restrict high-fiber whole grains and dried beans, but many fruits and vegetables, which are great sources of fiber, are still available for dialysis patients. If you are also faced with this problem, apple, blueberry, carrot, strawberry and other fruits and vegetables may be your good choice. Besides, adults are usually recommended to consume 20 to 35g of fiber one daily. (If you want to know how much fiber certain fruit or vegetable contains or get a high-fiber food list in detail, you can send email to kidneycares@hotmail.com)

Take some medications

If only depending on a healthy diet doesn’t work very well, patients may need one stool softener or laxative. Colace and senna are two common medications used to deal with constipation. However, they may cause some side effects such as low potassium level and high sodium level. Consult the online doctor to ask which type and brand of laxative is suitable for you.
