Can Diabetic Nephropathy Cause Hypertension

2014-02-05 11:43

Diabetic nephropathy is secondary to diabetes. As kidneys become impaired, the patients will experience a number of symptoms. Can diabetic nephropathy cause hypertension?

Hypertension is also known as high blood pressure. It is a common complication of diabetic nephropathy.

Diabetic Nephropathy is a kind of kidney disorder in which renal function fails progressively. Hypertension in diabetic nephropathy is mainly attributed to two factors.

Firstly, healthy kidneys can eliminate extra fluid from body. In right condition, the content of fluid keeps at a constant level. Hence, the blood pressure will keep at a constant level. However, in diabetic nephropathy, the diseased kidneys fail to filter out fluid from body adequately. High buildup of fluid in blood vessel can contribute to hypertension.

In addition, increased production of renin is also a cause of hypertension in diabetic nephropathy.

As kidneys are impaired, they will not get adequate blood supply, thus increasing the secretion of renin. Renin can stimulate the production of angiotensin Ⅰ. Antigiotensin Ⅰhas no biological activity, but it can stimulate secretion of antigiotensin Ⅱ. Antigiotensin Ⅱ can contract blood vessels, thus raising blood pressure. In addition, it also can increase the production of aldosterone. Aldosterone is a kind of hormone and it can increase the absorption of sodium and fluid. If the blood volume increases, it also can result in hypertension.

The above is the cause of hypertension in diabetic nephropathy. As hypertension is a significant accelerator of renal function decline, it is important for the patients to decrease high blood pressure.

While the antihypertensive medications like ACE inhibitors and ARB drugs can lower blood pressure, it can not control it’s the underlying cause.

To control hypertension in diabetic nephropathy, a treatment should be applied to restore the impaired kidney. Micro-Chinese Medicines Osmotherapy is an effective treatment for diabetic nephropathy and has showed remarkable therapeutic effects in clinic.
