How to Slow Down the Deterioration of PKD

2012-12-06 15:07

Different from other kidney diseases, PKD is a hereditary disease and it will accompany the patients for lifelong time. PKD patients need meticulous daily cares which can help slow down the illness progression and relieve discomforts, thus improving their life quality.

Here are the effective prevention measures that are conducive for PKD patients:

1. Prevention of cold. PKD and nearly all kidney diseases are hard to be completely cured and easy to relapse. Cold especially repeated cold is a main risk inducement of relapsing of PKD, so it is very important that PKD patients should pay more attention to the weather and keep warm and stay far away from cold.

2. Positive prevention and timely treatment for infections especially urinary tract infection (more common in female). PKD patients usually will have frequent urinary tract infection which will in turn worsen PKD, therefore early prevention and treatment is very necessary.

3. Well control of blood pressure. Most PKD patients will have hypertension before the renal functions are impaired and high blood pressure will speed up renal damages. At the same time hypertension will damage the blood vessels in heart and brain and it will cause very serious complications such as stroke for those that are accompanied by rupture and bleeding of cerebral hemangioma. Therefore well control of blood pressure is very crucial for delaying renal deterioration and preventing complications.

4. Proper diet and nutrition. Reasonable diet is very important for controlling the progression of PKD. It is better to have low-protein, low-fat and low-salt diet (2-3g/day). Have less food containing potassium and phosphorus and more that are rich in vegetable crude fiber and vitamin.

5. Positive and optimistic mood. Negative emotions like anger, anxiety and pessimism can not only damage the liver, kidney and other organs but also can lower the immunity and make patients more susceptible to viruses and bacteria which will cause relapsing and worsening of illness conditions, therefore patients should maintain a positive and optimistic mood which can make them stronger to resist the pains and discomforts and build up confidence for life and recovery.
