Foods to Avoid to Prevent Further Going Up of Creatinine

2012-12-01 14:31

High creatinine level in chronic kidney disease means the illness has developed into the stage of renal failure. The illness condition has been very severe and there are a lot of waste products and toxins accumulating the body, therefore what the patients eat is very important. Improper and unscientific diets will worsen renal damages, therefore it is necessary to know what foods should be avoided for high creatinine patients to help prevent further going up of their already high creatinine.

1. Low-salt. Low-salt diet is the most basic diet principle for CKD patients with high creatinine. The daily salt intake should be less than 3g. Low-salt diets have a lot of benefits---relieving retention of water and sodium and controlling high blood pressure so as to slow down the decline of renal functions and the accumulation of creatinine and other metabolic wastes.

2. Avoid high-potassium foods. High blood potassium will cause fatigue and arrhythmia. The following is the list of potassium content of some some foods in our daily life.

Potassium content<150mg/100g: onion, pumpkin, wax gourd, eggplant, watermelon, apple, pears, pineapple, etc.

Potassium content is between 150-250mg/100g: fresh cowpea, taro, carrot, turnip, cabbage, celery, leek, orange, persimmon, etc.

Potassium content>250mg/100g: fresh peas, hyacinth bean, potato, yam, lotus root, rape, spinach, asparagus lettuce, leek, cauliflower, fresh mushroom, white fungus, black fungus, kelp, laver, pomelo, peach, apricot, jujube, crabapple, bananas, etc.

3. Avoid high-phosphorus foods. Long term high blood phosphorus will cause osteoporosis, joint pain and fracture. High-phosphorus foods mainly include sea foods (including sea plants), animal offals, peanut, walnut, honey, egg yolk, tea and some dried fruits.

4. Avoid too much intake of protein. Proper daily intake of proteins should be less than 20-30g including vegetable protein in staple foods.

5. Avoid fatty foods. Put less oil while cooking meals and limit the intake of fried and greasy foods. Plant oils that contain less or no saturated fatty acid are better than animal oils. What is better, plant oils contain unsaturated fatty acid such as linoleic acid which has been proved has the benefits of preventing aggravation of renal functions. And corn oil and linseed oil are the best choices.

In addition, high creatinine should avoid having too much fast foods. Beans, beer, strong tea, coffee, tobacco and alcoholic drinks should all be avoided.
