What are the Symptoms and Signs of High Creatinine

2012-10-21 11:32

Creatinine usually refers to serum creatinine and it is an important indicator reflecting severity of renal damages. When the creatinine is higher than the normal range, the higher the creatinine is, the more severe the renal damages are.

The level of serum creatinine can reflect damaged conditions of the renal parenchyma, though it is not very sensitive especially in the early stage. Therefore patients should pay more attention to protect their kidneys even when there is only slight increase of creatinine.

When there is obvious increase of serum creatinine, it means that more than half of kidney functions have been damages and the glomerular filtration rate has decreased to 1/3 of the normal function and patients will have a series of discomforts and symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, urinary abnormalities, etc.

What are the common symptoms and signs of high creatinine level?

1. Fatigue and difficulty in concentration.

2. Discomforts in the gastrointestinal tract, bleeding, nausea, vomiting

3. Urinary abnormalities such as night urination, diuresis, pale color of urine, urinary frequency, urinary urgency and urinary pains.

4. Anemia, paleness

5. Susceptibility to bleeding

6. Pains in the bone, back and abdomen. Back pain is usually dull and physical traumas can cause sharpened pain.

7. Irregular menstruation

8. Decline of sexual functions

9. Edema which usually starts from the eyelid and in serious conditions; it can affect the whole body or even cause ascites and fluid in chest.

10. High blood pressure which should be brought under control or it will speed up renal deterioration and cause further increase of creatinine.

11. Hematuria (blood in urine)

12. Proteinuria (bubble in urine)

13. Hypoalbuminemia.

14. Metabolic acidosis.

Edema is one of the most common symptoms and signs of high creatinine level, however the severity of edema is not proportional to that of high creatinine and it is not an indicator for measuring the prognosis of high creatinine.
