Is It Serious to Have Slightly High Creatinine

2012-10-06 15:26

High creatinine level always indicates kidney problem and when creatinine increases to a certain level, dialysis or kidney transplant will be needed. However, in many cases, kidney disease patients make light of slightly high creatinine, because they think their creatinine level is not so high to need dialysis and they need not to worry about it. Is it the real case?

Firstly, let's find out why creatinine level increases when there is kidney problem.

In our daily life, various wastes are produced during our physiological activity and creatinine is just one of them. Normally, creatinine and these wastes are discharged by kidney; however, once kidneys are damaged, renal excretion function decreases, as a consequence of which, creatinine level and the level of other wastes increase.

What does slightly high creatinine mean?

Our kidney is composed of tens and thousands of nephrons, and only when a small group of nephrons are damaged, there is no symptoms at all. According to clinical studies, creatinine levels increases when at least a half of kidney function is impaired, that is to say, when creatinine level begins to increase, at least a half of renal tissues have been damaged. Thereby, kidney disease patients should attach enough more attention to elevated creatinine level.

How to lower high creatinine level?

The higher the creatinine level is, the higher the risk that patients suffer from dialysis. Therefore, lowering elevated creatinine level effective means a lot for kidney disease patients.

In cases of kidney disease, creatinine level increases because of impaired kidney function, so recovering kidney function is the best method to normalize creatinine level. However, as we can only repair these damaged renal tissues and can not make these dead renal tissue alive again, kidney function can not be recovered completely. Under such a condition, aside from medical treatment, we also need to change our diet to reduce the production of creatinine and other wastes. Generally speaking, low-protein diet, low-phosphorus diet, low-potasssium diet and low-sodium diet are necessary with high creatinine level and it not only helps to reduce the generation of wastes, but also avoid increasing extra renal burden.

All in all, slightly high creatinine level, even though is not so severe compared with extreme high creatinine level, should be treated seriously; otherwise, their creatinine level will keep increasing to the level that dialysis is required.
