What are the Diets for High Creatinine

It is common that kidney disease patients will have increased creatinine level, bubble urine, blood urine, hypertension, and edema and so on. In case of high creatinine level, patients should know what the proper diets are so as to lower creatinine or at least prevent further increase of creatinine.

1. Have more supply of vitamins. Foods that are rich in vitamin A, vitamin B2 and vitamin C (fresh fruits and vegetables) are conducive for renal failure patients with high creatinine.

2. Limit the intake of salt. If there is only increased creatinine and there are no oliguria or edema, there is no restriction of water and salt. In case of severe edema, hypertension or even heart failure, the intake of salt should be strictly limited.

3. High quality proteins. Since patients have azotemia, the intake of protein should be limited to reduce burdens to the kidneys. High quality proteins such as lean meat, egg and milk are good choice because they produce fewer metabolic wastes than plant proteins.

Besides diets, alcohol and tobacco should be restricted to high creatinine patients. This is because tobacco and alcohol have especially great damages to the liver, kidneys and blood vessels. Too much alcohol and tobacco will worsen the renal atherosclerosis and speed up glomerular sclerosis, therefore weather the kidney function is normal or not, high creatinine patients should get rid of alcohol and tobacco to avoid extra damages to the kidneys. What is more, they can also cause damages to other tissues and organs and this will create an unfavorable internal environment which is not conducive for lowering creatinine.

However only diet is not enough because persistent high level of creatinine indicates that more than half of the kidney functions have been affected, therefore treatments should be received to stop further damages and reverse renal fibrosis or the kidneys will finally fail its functions.
