High Creatinine Level and Low GFR

2013-07-08 13:54

High creatinine level and low GFR are common issues that appear in the test report for people with kidney disease, for example, creatinine 4.8 and GFR 14. If you are faced with this problem, how to lower high creatinine level and increase GFR level must be your biggest concern.

High creatinine level and low GFR

They are two tests used to check how well kidneys are filtering waste products. Normally, GFR ranges from 90-120ml/min, and creatinine level changes between 0.5 and 1.2mg/dl. Some factors such as age, gender and race may cause slight fluctuation about these values. Regardless of these factors, low GFR along with high creatinine level can release severe kidney disease. Generally, the higher creatinine level and lower GFR level, the more severe patients’ condition is.

If you have your test report in hand, find out which stage your disease is.

Creatinine is a waste product that comes from muscle metabolism. When kidneys can’t remove creatinine from the blood effectively, creatinine level increases. Therefore, creatinine level can be a measure to divide kidney disease stages. GFR, compared with creatinine level, is a more accurate indicator.

Below shows GFR and creatinine level for each stage of kidney disease:

Stage 1: Normal GFR and creatinine level

Stage 2: GFR 60-89ml/min, creatinine < 177umol/l

Stage 3: GFR 30-59ml/min, creatinine 178-442umol/l

Stage 4: GFR 15-29ml/min, creatinine 442-707umol/l

Stage 5: GFR<15ml/min, creatinine > 707umol/l

How to lower high creatinine level and increase low GFR

Different stages need different management. In stage 1 and stage 2, kidney can still do their job optimally, that is to say, only a small part of kidney functioning cells are just damaged. In this condition, it is possible to reverse kidney damage and patients’ condition. However, in the moderate or end stage of kidney disease, some kidney cells are damaged but some kidney cells are necrotic. At present, what we can do is to make the damaged kidney cells alive again, but for necrotic cells, we can do nothing.

As long as more and more kidney cells recover to work, creatinine level will be declined and GFR level will be increased. If you haven’t find effective treatment, you can consult the online doctor so you can talk with him face to face.
