Renal Anemia in Stage 4 Kidney Failure

2013-10-24 15:52

Renal anemia is a common complication in kidney failure and it can start in the early stage. In stage 4 kidney failure, renal anemia can become very serious. This can worsen the patients' life quality and the prognosis of the condition significantly. What are the causes of renal anemia in stage 4 kidney failure? Reduced production of red blood cells

Approximately 85% of endogenous EPO is produced by kidneys. When renal function declines, less EPO will be produced, thus deceasing the number of red blood cells. EPO takes its effect through the special EPOR. However, in stage 4 kidney failure, the high levels of toxins and waste products can restrain EPOR, resulting in relative EPO deficiency.

In addition, the toxic substances such as PTH can inhibit the production of red blood cells. Long-term low-protein diet can cause deficiency of raw material of making red blood cells. Malnutrition can occur in up to 30~60% of patients with Chronic Kidney Failure.

The latest research shows that L-carnitine deficiency is also related to renal anemia.

More damage to red blood cells

In normal condition, the life expectancy of red blood cells is about 120 days. However, in stage 4 kidney failure, the life span of red blood cells will reduce to 40~60 days. The uremic toxins can restrain the growth of red blood cells and increase fragility of red blood cells. This also can shorten the life span of red blood cells significantly.

Blood loss

In chronic kidney failure, the blood platelet reduces in number and can not function well. This can cause hemorrhagic tendency. Functional disorder of blood platelets is due to high building up of metabolic byproducts and toxins in body.

The above are the major causes of anemia in chronic kidney failure. You can email to kidneycares@hotmail.com  for more medical suggestions to deal with it.

The clinical manifestations of renal anemia varies from the anemia degree.Fatigue, pale face, and dizziness can occur in stage 4  kidney failure.
