We need to take some medications if we have renal disease. Kidneys have many functions and play irreplaceable role for our normal life. Once our kidneys shut down, we will definitely experience some symptoms like high blood pressure, proteinuria, anemia and so on. With different illness condition, we need different medications. Although these medications can not help us reserve kidney damages, they can help to bring symptoms under control.

Medications for high blood pressure caused by renal disease

Kidneys help to maintain our blood pressure in the normal range, and once we are affected by renal disease, we are at high risk of developing high blood pressure. Common medications for high blood pressure in renal disease include ACE inhibitors, Angiotension II receptor blockers (ARBs), beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, direct renin inhibitors, diuretics, vasodilators and so on.

Among these medications, diuretics also can be used to treat fluid buildup caused by chronic kidney disease.

Medications for proteinuria or heart failure

Proteinuria is one of the typical symptoms of chronic renal disease and heart failure always occurs as the complications of advanced kidney problem. With proteinuria or heart failure, ACE inhibitors (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors) and ARBs (angiotensin receptor blockers) can be used to help us control our condition.

Medications to control electrolyte imbalance

Potassium binders and diuretics are helpful for lower potassium level in the blood, but not every chronic renal disease patient need these medications, as some kidney disease patients have low potassium level. In this condition, patients can try to improve their potassium by adjusting their diet.

Besides, kidney failure can cause an increased breakdown of bone and abnormal metabolism of calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D and parathyroid hormone (PTH). Medications can be used to remit this condition include calcium-containing phosphate binders and non-calcium phosphate binders and calcitriol.

Medications for anemia

Erythropoietin therapy and iron replacement therapy are helpful for anemia caused by chronic renal disease.
