2012-11-22 16:26

Stage 5 CKD is the end stage of chronic kidney disease. In this stage, the illness conditions have been very severe. GFR (glomerular filtration rate) is lower than 15ml/min/1.73m2 and remaining kidney function is less than 15%. In this stage, patients need to take renal replacement therapy to prolong their life expectancy. They may need either dialysis or kidney transplant.

CKD is not a single disease and it includes the majority of kidney diseases. It can be caused by disorders in the kidney itself or other diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, purpura, lupus, etc.

At present, there is no complete cure for most chronic kidney diseases and it is unpractical to expect complete recovery. The goal of effective treatments should aim at controlling symptoms and complications and slowing down illness progression.

At present the treatment options for stage 5 CKD include the following ones:

1. Dialysis. It mainly refers to hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. It makes use of semipermeable membrane to discharge accumulated metabolic wastes and toxins as well as excessive water and electrolyte out of the body so as to achieve the purpose of purifying blood which can create a favorable internal environment for more effective medicines and treatments. And in recent years, home hemodialysis has become more and more popular than standard hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

2. Kidney transplantation. It is to transplant a healthy kidney to replace the failed kidney to enable patients to regain kidney functions and get rid of dialysis and have normal life again. However there is a global issue on kidney transplant that is the extreme scarcity of matching kidney sources. What is more, patients have to take anti-rejection medicines for the rest of their life and in some cases the transplanted will become failed years after the surgery.

3. Chinese medicines. Traditional Chinese medicines aim at regulating disorders and imbalances and recovering kidney functions, however it takes relatively long time to take effects and it is not very suitable in some urgent conditions.

4. Immunotherapy. It can be said to be latest treatment for CKD. To make it simple, it is the combination of Chinese therapy and western therapy and has taken the advantages of the both.
