If you are in stage 1 or stage 2 CKD, you should do the following things to protect kidney function.

-You should do blood test and urine test regularly to check whether there is protein or red blood cells in urine or not.

-To protect your kidney function, you should also control blood pressure into 130/80 mmHg.

-If you have diabetes, you should control blood sugar level into 110 mg/dL before meal and 140 mg/dL after meal.

-You should avoid drug abuse and overeat, limit the intake of protein and sodium, do some gentle exercise regularly, give up smoking, etc.

If you are in stage 3 or stage 4 CKD, you should do the following things.

In such stage, your kidney function ranges from 15 to 59. There are many symptoms such as foamy urine, swelling, high blood pressure, anemia, fatigue, etc.

-Limit sodium intake into 6-8 g per day. And protein intake should be restricted into 0.6-0.8 g/kg per day. You should also avoid food high in phosphorus, such as peanut and walnut. Supplement calcium to prevent renal bone disease.

-Avoid drug abuse in case that they have renal toxicity.

-Improve anemia to ensure that enough blood flows to kidneys.

-Do urine test and blood test regularly to have a general knowledge of your kidney function.

If you are in end stage renal failure, you should do the following things.

In this stage, there is less than 15 % kidney function. There are more symptoms and body malaise.

-Control your diet strictly. For example, sodium intake should be less than 6 g. Protein intake should no more than 0.6 g/kg per day. And avoid food high in potassium to prevent hyperkalemia.

-Improve anemia

-Limit water intake to prevent swelling. The mount of water intake should be the urine output last day plus 500 cc water.

-Do physical examination regularly.
