Renal Atrophy: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

2013-04-08 15:23

Renal atrophy is a medical term in morbid anatomy which means that the kidney is much smaller than the normal size taking into consideration of the patient’s age, gender, height and body weight. Long term kidney disease can damage renal tissues especially the glomeruli. As a result, kidney functions will be gradually lost.

Causes of renal atrophy

Patients can have left kidney atrophy or right kidney atrophy or atrophy of both kidneys. Renal atrophy is not a single kidney disease and it can be caused by a variety of factors such as congenital renal hypoplasia, acute glomerular diseases, chronic glomerulonephritis, diabetic nephropathy, hypertensive nephropathy, organ rejection after kidney transplant, necrosis of kidney cortex, Alport syndrome, acute renal tubular necrosis, nephrophthisis, renal artery stenosis, etc.

Symptoms of renal atrophy

Atrophic kidney disease can cause nausea, vomiting, fatigue, anemia, swelling in face, legs, feet, itchy skin, back pain, high blood pressure, hematuria, proteinuria etc. Usually unilateral kidney atrophy does not cause high blood pressure, but bilateral kidney atrophy is much more common in clinic. Renal functions will be affected and it is the renal excretion function that is first affected, therefore patients will have high creatinine, high BUN, etc. Kidney functions can experience rapid deterioration under the inducements of tiredness, urinary tract infections, urinary obstruction, nephrotoxicity drugs, etc.

Treatments for renal atrophy

The root cause of renal atrophy is renal fibrosis and renal scarring due to kidney inflammation, cell phenotype transformation and renal parenchymal impairments, therefore treatment for renal atrophy should aim at block renal fibrosis, repair damaged renal tissues so as to prevent further atrophy and recover kidney functions.

We mainly adopt Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy and symptomatic treatment with western medicines for patients of renal atrophy.

Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy can repair glomerular basement membrane so as to increase the excretion of toxins and wastes and reduce the leaking of protein and red blood cells. It can repair DNA of damaged renal functional cells so as to promote the repairing and regeneration of renal cells and renal tissues. Renal structures will be restored and impaired renal functions will be improved.
