Uric Acid and Kidney Disease Progression

Recently, many clinical studies have been done to learn about the relationship between uric acid and kidney disease progression and some of them have indicated that uric acid levels are increased in patients with kidney dysfunction. Well then, how is uric acid associated with kidney disease and will it accelerate kidney disease progression?

What is uric acid?

Uric acid is the byproduct formed when our body breaks down and metabolizes purines which is organic compounds and can be found in the genetic structure of plants and animal. Everyone has uric acid, but it is naturally present in small amounts.

How is uric acid associated with kidney disease?

In normal cases, about two-thirds of uric acid is filtered and then discharged by our kidneys. And another one-thirds of uric acid is discharged through excrement and sweat. Therefore, a healthy kidney plays an important role in keeping uric acid level in the normal range.

When one is diagnosed with kidney disease, he has a high risk to develop high uric acid in blood. But not everyone with high uric acid level in blood is certainly suffering kidney problem. Aside from kidney disease, there are some illness conditions that can cause high uric acid in blood.

How to prevent high uric acid level in kidney disease?

1. Do mild physical exercises regularly and remember to avoid drastic sports.

2. Drink much more water and soda water is the best choice.

3. Eat more vegetables like eggplant and lettuce. Eat less bean and bean products and avoid spinage.

4. Eat less meat. Meat contain animal protein which is the essential substance of our body and can not be obtained by eating other foods. Therefore, if you are a kidney disease patient with high uric acid, you can eat some meat, but remember to control the amount.

6. Do not drinking alcohol, especially beer.

7. Have a tight control about kidney disease progression. Kidney is the major organ that help to discharge excess uric acid. With the decrease of kidney function, uric acid level in blood may increase, so having a tight control will be helpful for preventing or controlling high uric acid in blood.
