Is Blood in Urine must Caused by Kidney Disease

Blood in urine is called hematuria in clinic and in recent years, there is increased trend in case of hematuria without other obvious accompanied symptoms. Usually the hematuria is glomerular and a lot of importance and researches have been devoted to it.

Once there is red urine, first do not be alarmed. The first step is to make clear weather it is true hematuria or pseudo hematuria because some medicines can cause red urine such as aminopyrine, rifampicin and phenol red, etc.

There are two kinds of hematuria---gross hematuria and microscopic hematuria which can only be detected under microscope. If the urine is red and it has been confirmed to be ture hematuria, it usually indicates serious illness conditions and therefore timely and proper diagnosis and treatments should be received.

There are many reasons that can cause blood in urine and there are more than 95% hematuria cases are due to infections in the urinary system. Various nephritis, urinary tract infections, stones in urinary tract, hemorrhagic cystitis, renal tuberculosis, hyperuricemia nephrotic, diabetic nephrotic, renal tumor, injuries in the kidneys and ureter, etc. Blood urine is one of the major symptoms of the above mentioned diseases.

Of cause blood in urine is not definitely related to kideny damages. Besides diseases in kidneys and urinary tract, many systemic diseases can cause blood in urine such as purpura, SLE, hemophilia, leukemia, etc.

Usually hematuria is accompanied with other symtoms.

1. If there is renal colic, it indicates stones in kidneys or ureter; if there is interruption, it is more common in urethra and bladder stones.

2. If the urine flow is fine and there is difficulty in urination, it indicates prostatitis or prostate cancer.

3. If there is urinary frequency, urgency and pain, it is more common in cystitis and urethritis; if there is also back pain, it might be pyelonephritis.

4. If there is edema, high blood pressure and proteinuria, it might indicate glomerulonephritis.

5. If there are renal masses, it indicates tumor or cysts. Unilateral mass usually indicates tumor, hydronephrosis and kidney cysts and bilateral masses are more common in congenital PKD and if the kidney is movable, it indicates nephroptosis and wandering kidney.

6. If there is hemorrhage in skin and other parts, it usually indicates blood diseases and some infectious diseases.

7. If there is chyluria, it usually indicates filariasis and chronic pyelonephritis.

Since there are many causes of blood in urine, it is crucial to fist have correct diagnosis so as to have more effective and targeted treatments.
