Reduce Protein in Urine for Chronic Kidney Disease

2012-11-18 09:11

Chronic kidney disease is not a single disease and it is the general term for the majority of kidney diseases in clinic. Except acute nephritis and acute urinary tract infections and other acute renal inflammatory diseases, nearly all other disorders in the kidneys can be attributed to CKD.

CKD is relatively benign and chronically progressive disease, however if it is not treated properly and timely, the illness conditions will become worse and worse and in the end develop into renal failure and uremia.

One of the common symptoms and sign in CKD is protein in urine which is called proteinuria in clinic. Proteinuria is one major indicator of severe damages of the glomerulus and factor affecting the prognosis of CKD, therefore timely and proper treatments are very important. Severe and non-selective proteinuria itself has renal toxicity and long terms persistent protein loss in urine will not only cause malnutrition but also will in turn worsen kidney functions.

To reduce protein in urine, we should first make clear the underlying cause of kidney damages and declined kidney functions. For example, weather it is primary or secondary, it is congenital or acquired, etc.

Western medicines mainly use hormones and immunosuppressant such as prednisone and cyclophosphamide. They have quick effect on reducing protein in urine, but the effect can not last long and there will be many side effects such as reduction of white cells and damages to liver functions.

ACEI and ARB are also important medicines for treating proteinuria and reducing protein leakage in urine. What is more, ACEI and ARB can help reduce high blood pressure and this will slow down the illness progression and achieve a better prognosis.

To treat proteinuria from the root, kidney functions should be recovered or protein will once again appear in urine after the medicines are stopped or under some inducements such as cold, fever, infections, etc.
