How to Lower My Protein in Urine

2012-10-28 11:22

Under normal circumstances there can be protein in urine, but the amount is very small, less than 150mg/d. When protein in urine increases, routine urine test can detect it and it is called proteinuria in clinic.

Protein in urine has very complex clinical significance and persistent proteinuria is indicator of renal parenchymal damages. When protein leakage in urine decreases, it can be improvements of the kidney disease or worsening of renal functions when most renal glomerulus has been scarred. The amount of protein leakage can not reflect the severity of illness condition. Small amount of protein in urine does not definitely mean that the kidney damage is light and vice verse. For example, minimal change nephritis and mesangial proliferative nephritis have mild renal damages, but the daily protein leakage can be up to several grams or even more than 10 grams; while the focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and crescents nephritis have relatively severe renal damages, but the protein leakage can only be a few grams. Therefore to determine the severity of renal damages, many factors including the amount and duration of protein, pathological type as well as physical condition and kidney function need to be taken into account. Hence patients should not only focus on the protein in urine to determine the curative effects of the treatments. It mainly depends on the pathological type and kidney functions. When there is large amount of protein in urine, do not be too worried and when there is small amount of protein in urine, do not neglect it. The best way is to take related tests to confirm the disease and make clear which part of the kidney is damaged and receive proper treatments accordingly. If the kidney function can be improved, protein in urine can be lowered and patients’ life quality can be enhanced.

In addition, patients need to prevent relapsing by avoiding inducing factors such as cold, tiredness, and diarrhea and adjust diets and lifestyle.
