Q: When I have piss, it foams. Can you tell me what does it mean when I piss and it foams? Should I be concerned if it does not go away after a few days?
A: Passing foamy urine now and then is normal, because the speed of urination and other factors can influence this. However, it should draw your attention if you have persistent foamy urine which is able to be noticed over time. In this case, it can be a sign of protein in urine, also called proteinuria. Increased amounts of protein in urine may indicate a serious kidney-related kidney problem.
If you have foamy urine most of the time, it is likely to be a kidney disease problem.
Why does kidney disease cause protein in urine?
Healthy kidneys do not allow a significant amount of protein to pass through their filters. However, if filters are damaged by kidney disease, they will let proteins such as albumin leak from the blood into urine. Proteinuria is often a sign of kidney disease.
Of course, it does not mean protein in urine is always a kidney-related problem. If you have foamy urine now and then, it is normal and caused by other factors.
What are other factors causing protein in urine?
1. Protein in urine can also be a result of overproduction of protein by the body.
2. Mild dehydration
Mild dehydration can result in bubbles in urine. This is because mild dehydration leads to the urine to concentrate and highly concentrated urine tends to foam. Diabetes patients are at risk for dehydration, so they are likely to experience foamy urine than those who have no diabetes.
3. Rapid urination
Dehydration can make people to urinate rapidly. Just as we mentioned above, the speed of urine will influence it. So if foamy urine are due to dehydration, increasing the level of hydration can help alleviate protein in urine.
Not all protein in urine means kidney disease, and you need to be overly concerned about. If it is related with kidney disease, you need to take effective treatment promptly, otherwise it will cause further kidney damage.
