Symptoms of Kidney Damage with Reduced GFR

2013-12-30 10:14

Glomerular filtration rate(GFR) is a very important and sensitive index in measuring how well your kidneys are functioning.Reduced GFR is a typical sign of kidney damage. The following article will introduce the symptoms of kidney damage with reduced GFR.

Elevated creatinine

When blood flows through kidneys, the waste products and extra fluid will be eliminated from body by kidneys.Creatinine is the byproduct of muscle metabolism and is normally filtered out of body by kidneys. When GFR reduces, less blood is filtered by kidneys, thus resulting in buildup of creatinine in blood.

High blood pressure

High blood pressure is one of common symptoms of kidney damage with reduced GFR.In return,it can accelerate renal function decline. The diseased kidneys fail to filter out the extra fluid from body, thus resulting in accumulation of fluid in body.Hence, high blood pressure will result. In addition, swelling on legs and other body parts can also appear as a result of high buildup of fluid in body.

Foamy urine

Foamy urine can occur in some patients with kidney problem, especially those with damage to glomeruli.Foamy urine may occur if there are heavy proteins in urine.Glomeruli can prevent the leakage of useful substances from body for the tiny holes on them. However,if glomeruli are impaired, they may become leaky. As a result, the proteins may pass through glomeruli and then end up in urine.

Fatigue

Fatigue is one of common symptoms of kidney problem with reduced GFR, especially in the advanced stage. The major culprit of fatigue is anemia in which the number of red blood cells is lower than normal.Anemia occurs when the diseased kidneys can not work normally to produce EPO. EPO is a kind of hormone which can help the body produce red blood cells.
