2013-07-26 10:36

Bone disease of CKDChronic kidney disease can affect almost every part of your body. When CKD is left untreated, it can lead to renal failure and also cause many other healthy problems like bone disease. Bone disease is a common complication of kidney disease and kidney failure.

How does bone disease occur with kidney disease?

Healthy kidneys help keep your bones healthy. They do this in the following two ways:

1. Healthy kidneys have the ability to keep balance of electrolytes. Under such a condition, phosphorus and calcium level is in a fixed value. When your kidneys are not working, phosphorus easily builds up in your body, which will lead to low calcium. Low calcium in your body makes your bones weak.

2. Healthy kidneys help your body use vitamin D. When kidney disease is present, they can not make your bones use vitamin D. This can also cause your bones weak and easily broken.

How to know you have bone disease?

In early stage, bone disease may not show any obvious signs. The only way to know you have bone disease is to be tested.

Your doctor may do a few tests to check levels of chemicals in your body which affect your bone health. Your doctor may suggest a blood test to check for phosphorus, calcium, parathyroid hormone(PTH) and vitamin D, or bone density scan or bone biopsy.

Why is so important to treat your bone disease?

Bone disease affects many people with chronic kidney disease. If you do not treat it timely, it puts you at risk for bone and joint pain, broken bones, infections and skin problems. The things that cause your bone disease will put you at risk for heart attacks. Therefore, have a talk with your doctor about how to prevent your bone disease. He or she may give you some suggestions to prevent bone disease, like changing a diet. He or she may recommend you as follows:

Dietary tips to prevent bone disease

1. Limit phosphorus intake

The damaged kidneys have no function of keeping the balance of electrolytes in your body. In that case, high phosphorus will easily build up in your body. Thereby, you should choose some low phosphorus foods and avoid high phosphorus foods such as diary foods, milk, red meat, fish, cheese, nuts and peanuts butter, whole grain bread, dried beans and peas, cocoa and beer.

2. Take vitamin D

Healthy kidneys help your body use vitamin D to absorb calcium from the foods you eat. When kidneys are not working, your doctor may prescribe a man-made vitamin D to help your body to absorb calcium.

3. Exercise

Do exercise regularly to help strengthen your bones and keep them from breaking.

4. Give up smoking

Smoking makes your bone disease worse.

5. Take a phosphate binder

It helps limit how much phosphorus your body absorbs from your foods. You take this kind of medicine when you eat so it can work.
