Kidney disease patients run high risk for hyperlipidemia due to proteinuria
Proteinuria refers to the presentation of excess protein in urine. It is an abnormal condition, as for a healthy person, the protein excretion should be no more than 150mg a day. Normally, protein is kept in our body through our kidneys, so kidney plays an important role for the occurrence of proteinuria. For people with kidney disease, kidney tissues are damaged, which makes unable in performing normally. Under such a condition, large amounts of protein leak into urine and form proteinuria.
Why is hyperlipidemia associated with proteinuria?
Protein is the basic of a healthy body and we can say no protein, no life. We need to consume a certain protein everyday, so ingesting enough protein through diet is very important for us to live normally and healthily.
For people with kidney disease, large amounts of protein leak into urine, leading to low protein in blood which is also called hypoproteinemia in clinic. Under such a condition, to meet the basic demand of our body, our livers will begin to synthetize lipoprotein and thus cause hyperlipidemia. For kidney disease patients with severe proteinuria, aside from hyperlipidemia, they also run high risk for swelling or edema. Massive protein are lost from blood, causing decrease of plasma colloid osmotic pressure, which can trigger swelling.
For kidney disease patients, the key point to prevent hyperlipidemia and swelling is to control proteinuria and reduce protein in urine effectively. As long as protein are kept and consumed in the body successfully, hyperlipidemia and swelling problem will be solved radically.
