Kidney Disease Related Types of PainKidney disease patients will suffer from various types of pains which can be dull and persistent or sharp and unbearable, it can be located in the back, abdomen or flanks of the body. According to different causes, kidney disease patients can experience different types of pains.

Kidney infections and sharp pains

Kidney infections or pyelonephritis is the common cause of kidney pains because of infections and inflammations of the renal tissues. The infections can cause the kidneys to become enlarged and the pain-sensitive capsule will be stretched and patients will feel sharp pains. The pain caused by kidney infection is often accompanied by high fever, nausea, vomiting, etc. The patients can be very painful and the infections can spread to other tissues and organs if not controlled timely, therefore immediate treatment should be sought to control the infections and prevent its spread into the blood. Often the pain can subdue when the infection is brought under control with oral taken antibiotics or intravenous antibiotics.

Kidney stones and pains

In case of kidney stones, the pain can be dull or sharp. If the stone is large and block the urinary tract, patients can feel dull pains. If the stone is small and it moves with urine in the urinary tract, it can cut the tissues and cause sharp pain or even blood in urine.

Kidney cysts and dull pains

Kidney cysts means there are one or several or even countless (in case of PKD) fluid-filled sacs in the patient’s kidneys. With the gradual enlargement of renal cysts, the kidneys will be enlarged and patients can feel dull and persistent pains in their back, abdomen and sides. Of cause in some cases the pain can become sharp or sudden such as in case of the complications of kidney stone and kidney infections.

Besides, other possible causes of pains for kidney disease patients include hydronephrosis, renal or perinephric abscess, renal infarction, blocked urine flow, bladder or ureteral spasm or trauma, etc.
