What does kidney function 40% mean? For a Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patient, there are different clinical indexes that can be used to reflect how well the kidney function like creatinine level and Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR). For a patients with kidney function 40%, he must have high creatinine level and decreased GFR which should range from 90 to 120mL/min/1.73m2.

What are the functions of kidney?

We each human being has two kidneys and with healthy kidney function we can live a normal life. Kidneys help us live freely by displaying the following functions:

1. Excretion function: our body produce various wastes like creatinine and urea nitrogen during metabolism; however once kidneys are damaged, kidney function decreases, these wastes can not be discharged timely and fully. This is the reason why Chronic Kidney Disease patients have high creatinine and high blood urea nitrogen level.

2. Keep balance of acid-base and electrolyte: A healthy kidney can help us excrete excessive electrolytes and adjust acid-base balance. The kidneys have two very important roles in maintaining the acid-base balance: to reabsorb bicarbonate from urine, and to excrete hydrogen ions into urine.

3. Produce urine: wastes produced by our body are usually discharged along with urine. And according to the physical condition, our kidneys will produce different amount of urine everyday. For instance, when we drink lots of water, there will be large amounts in our body and kidneys will produce much more urine. However, if our body is lack of water, our kidneys will produce less urine to make sure there are enough fluid in our body.

4. Regulate blood pressure: kidneys control blood pressure by expelling surplus sodium from our bodies. However, if blood pressure drops, the kidneys are able to release an enzyme into the body that causes blood pressure to rise to stable level.

5. Secretion function: kidney also has secretion function and it can secrete a variety of hormones like erythropoietin, and the enzyme renin and so on.

What symptoms we have with 40% kidney function?

40% kidney function means kidneys have been damaged seriously and they are fail in display the above functions. Under such a condition, patient may suffer from high blood pressure, foamy urine, fatigue, swelling, high creatinine level, itchy skin, poor appetite, poor concentration, anemia, blood urine and so on.

Lastly, although 40% kidney function is not good enough to maintain our normal life, we still can live a high quality life if our diagnosis and treatment are timely and effectively.
