Can Contrast Dyes Cause Damages To Kidney FunctionsContract dyes are commonly used in clinic while taking internal imaging tests such as X-rays, CT scan or MRI. The use of contrast dyes can help highlight the tissues, organs and body structures so that any problems can be detected.

For CKD patients, they usually need to have regular renal imaging tests and contract dyes will be used. However it has been reported that contrast dyes can cause some damages to kidney functions, therefore more caution should be made if you are a CKD patient or if you are at high risk of developing kidney disease. Contract dyes can reduce blood flow to the kidneys, resulting in renal ischemia and hypoxia. Renal tissues can not get adequate supply of blood, oxygen and necessary nutritions and they will be damaged and lose its normal functions. As a result, there will be accumulation of excessive water, electrolytes and wastes in the patient’s blood. What is more, since the contract dyes need to be filtered out of the body, it will definitely increase burdens to the kidneys.

It is necessary to have regular check of kidney functions before and after the use of contract dyes to have early detection if there is any problem.

Often some medicines will be prescribed by the doctor to help the body expel the contrast dyes from the body, however some patients can not tolerate the medicines especially those have renal problems or renal dysfunctions.

If the use of contrast dye is a must, you can at least choose the type that have less renal damages. There are high osmolar and low osmolar contract dyes and the later have less side effects and harms to kidney functions, therefore you can talk with the doctors and choose low osmolar contrast.

Besides choosing safer contrast dyes, regular checks of kidney functions, CKD patients should also try to avoid dehydration and stop taking NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for the sake of protecting their kidney functions.
