thanksgiving day dietsThanksgiving is around the corner! Family members will gather together from all over the world and there will be many delicious foods on this day. However there are some restrictions on the diets of kidney disease patients. Here are some diet suggestions for them for enjoying themselves without harming their kidney functions or worsening illness conditions.

The general diet principles for kidney patients are low-salt, low-potassium, low-phosphorus, low-protein, low-fat, high-vitamin and high-fiber.

Turkey is the typical food on Thanksgiving and renal patients should buy natural fresh or frozen turkey and avoid basted ones which contain too much salt. Prepare your turkey with salt-free rub and low-salt broth.

Popular side dishes include cranberry, sweet potatoes and green beans, cauliflower, celery, parsley, etc. Sweet potato is high in potassium; therefore patients should limit its intake. Green bean, celery, parsley, cauliflower are all good choice.

Pumpkin pie as well as apple pie and pecan pie are popular desserts on Thanksgiving. They are very delicious, but renal patients should limit the intake and do not have too much for the sake of their health.

As for the drinks on this day, most patients have known that they should avoid drinking alcoholic beverage and caffeine-containing drinks such as coffee and strong tea. Have proper amount of water intake according to urine output and the illness conditions for example weather the patients have edema, high blood pressure or not. If you do not want to drink water, beverages such as cranberry and apple juice are all good choices.

In addition, avoid or limit the intake of spicy and excitant foods and those that are high in fat such as spicy chicken wings. Do not have too much meat or its metabolism will produce a lot of wastes to increase kidney’s burden and further increase the level of creatinine and BUN.
