High quantity fish consumption will affect renal disease and cause deterioration of illness condition. Therefore, for patients with renal disease, calculating fish consumption is very necessary.
Fish contain high quality protein which is good for renal disease patients
Protein is composed of amino acid which can be generally divided into essential amino acid and nonessential amino acid. Our body can synthetize nonessential amino acid, but not essential amino acid which needs to be obtained from foods. Compared with nonessential amino acid, less wastes, say urea nitrogen here, will be produced, when essential amino acid is metabolized in our body.
For a patient with renal disease, impaired kidneys can not bear heavy burden. In such a condition, they need to limit protein intake and meanwhile intake some high quality protein to offer their body essential amino acid. Fish contains lots of high quality protein which can offer our body essential amino acid and meanwhile produce less wastes. Therefore, it is beneficial for renal disease patients to eat fish regularly, but please remember to limit the amount.
How much fish renal disease patients can eat everyday?
For a healthy adult, recommended daily protein intake is 0.8g per kilogram body weight per day. However, for renal disease patients, because of impaired kidney function, they need to ingest less protein. Usually, for renal disease patients with mild illness condition, they can ingest 0.6g protein per kilogram body weight per day and for these with kidney failure, but still have not started dialysis, 0.3-0.4 g per kilogram body weight per day is necessary. Renal disease patients with kidney dialysis needs to ingest much more protein, usually 1.2g per kilogram per day.
Different kind of fish have different protein contents. The following is a chart about protein content in different fish, and hope it is helpful for you.
Food (100g) Protein
Cold fish 17.6g
Haddock fish 16.4g
Orange roughy fish 22.64g
Monkfish 24g
Sardines 21.5
Salmon Fish Fillets 21.6
Tilapia Fish 24g
Tuna Fish (Steak) 25.6g
Tuan Fish (Tinned) 26.3g
For renal disease patients, about 60% of their protein intake should be high quality protein and they can calculate their protein amount that they are needed according to above chart.
