Can CKD Patients Drink Dark Cola

Dark cola is a common drinks in our daily life and deeply loves by all the people, especially young people. However, once an individual unfortunately develops CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease), can he drink dark cola as much as usual?

Actually, whether a CKD patient can drink dark cola or not depends on his illness condition. CKD is a chronic problem with long cours. It is divided into 5 stages and in the first two stage, patients may suffer no obvious symptoms. Kidney has great compensatory ability which means we can live normally when it is affected mildly. Also, this is the reason why Chronic Kidney Disease causes no signs in early stage. For people with CKD in early stage, they can drink dark cola, but without effective control, kidney disease will progresses to advanced stage which may need patients to adjust their daily diet and drink less dark cola.

Kidneys are responsible for keeping balance of electrolyte and when kidney function is impaired, they lose their ability to discharge excess electrolyte like phosphorus. Phosphorus build up in the blood, leading to high phosphorus level which stops our body from absorbing adequate calcium. Therefore, CKD patients with high phosphorus are at high risk to develop bone problems like bone pain and bone fracture.

Dark cola contain a certain amount of phosphorus which need to be avoided by CKD patients with high phosphorus in blood. High phosphorus level usually occurs when Chronic Kidney Diasease runs to advanced stage, so people with CKD in late stage should be careful in choosing drinks and try to avoid drinking too much dark cola.

Besides, aside from dark cola, CKD patients also need to limit protein intake, salt intake and potassium intake if lab tests show they have high level of potassium in the blood. Only with overall preventive measures, can CKD patients receive satisfactory treatment effects.
