urine testUrine check includes routine urine test, mid-stream urine culture and urinary protein quantitative and other items. So we can see that urine check is not identical with routine urine test, but it usually refers to routine urine test when we talk about urine check.

So what are the uses of doing routine urine test? Urine test is a preliminary check in clinic which should not be neglected. In the early stage of many kidney diseases, there will be protein or other tangible compositions in urine sediment. Abnormality in urine is often the first indicator of diseases in kidneys or urinary system. Urine test is the most general and basic diagnostic method for kidney diseases.

The items of urine test can be roughly classified into 4 major categories---kidney diseases, diabetes, urinary infections and others.

1. PH.

The normal value is 4.6-8.0. It can be neutral or weak alkaline due to diets, medicines or some diseases.

PH increase is often found in frequent vomiting, respiratory alkalosis, etc.

PH decrease is common in acidosis, chronic glomerulonephritis, diabetes, etc.

2. Specific gravity.

The normal value is 1.005-1.030. It is affected by age, water intake and sweating. The value of specific gravity can indicates infections in reproductive system.

High level: high fever, cardiac insufficiency, diabetes, etc.

Low level: chronic glomerulonephritis and pyelonephritis, etc.

3. Urine occult blood or red blood cell.

Under normal circumstances, it is negative.

Urine occult blood is positive: bleeding or kidney disease especially when protein in urine is accompanied.

Red blood cell is positive: urinary tract tumor, nephritis, urinary tract infections, etc.

4. Protein in urine.

Normally it is negative or there is only very small amount. Positive protein in urine indicates acute glomerulonephritis, diabetic nephropathy, etc.

5. Urine color.

The normal color is pale yellow or dark yellow and it is often affected by diets, exercises, sweating, etc. In case of hematuria, the urine can be red.

6. Urine sugar

Positive urine sugar indicates diabetes, hyperthyroidism, acromegaly, etc.

Changes in this items might indicate impairments of renal functions, therefore more attention should be attached to our daily urine and the simple routine urine test.
