Can CKD Affect the Patients' Eye Sight

2012-12-22 13:37

Patients of chronic kidney disease will have corresponding clinical symptoms such as proteinuria, hematuria, edema, high blood pressure. Sometimes especially in more advanced renal damages, there are not only symptoms and signs indicating renal damages but also signs and lesions in other organs and systems and in the end stage nearly all systems in the body will be affected due to excessive accumulations of wastes and toxins in the body.

Hypertension and diabetes are two major cause of chronic kidney disease and they are also the main cause of eye problems and loss of eye vision.

High blood pressure

Long term badly controlled high blood pressure can not only damage the kidneys but also the eye sight. It can cause retinal artery atherosclerosis, eyeground hemorrhage and eye ischemia so as to affect eye sight and in serious conditions might lead to blindness. Therefore close monitoring and early treatments for high blood pressure is very important.

Even if the renal damages are not caused by high blood pressure, CKD patients should have regular check of their blood pressure because hypertension is one common complication of CKD.

Diabetes

Diabetes can cause retinopathy which affects more than 95% cases and some patients even lose their eye sight. Diabetes can elevate blood sugar level and long time high blood glucose level can damage tiny blood vessels in the kidneys, feet and eyes and cause kidney problems, eye problems and feet problems. Prevention measure is to control blood sugar in the early stage and seek immediate treatment for eye problems.

Chronic glomerulonephritis

Chronic nephritis can cause occlusive peripheral arteritis and arteriosclerosis, therefore patients will have retinal change and eye problems due to vascular spasm and hardening. The main symptoms are decline of eye vision and edema around the eyes. So patients should have regular check and have early detection of eye problems.
