Diabetes and hba1c test

The hemoglobin test, also called as Hba1c, glycated hemoglobin test, is an important test to determine whether your Diabetes has been controlled well. It is also used for diagnosis of Diabetes and detecting risks of getting Diabetes.

What is Hba1c?

Hemoglobin is a substance within red blood cells which carry oxygen throughout the body. Glucose sticks to the haemoglobin to make a glycosylated haemoglobin molecule, called a haemoglobin A1c or Hba1c. The more glucose in bloodstream, the higher your hba1c will be. Red blood cells live for 8 to 12 weeks before they are replaced. Hba1c result will reflect how high your blood sugar has been on average for the past two to three months.

Why the test is performed?

Your doctor may order this test if you have Diabetes. It shows how well you are controlling your Diabetes. In addition, the test may also be used for diagnosis of Diabetes.

Normal results of Hba1c

Hba1c no more than 5.6% is normal.

The following are the results when the test is applied to diagnose Diabetes.

Normal: less than 5.7%

Pre-Diabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%

Diabetes: 6.5% or higher

If you Diabetes, it is necessary to talk with your doctors to discuss the target hba1c range for you. For many, the targeted goal is to control hba1c at 6.5-7%.

Note: normal lab values may differ slight in different laboratories. You may talk with your doctor to know the meaning for your specific test result.

What do abnormal lab test results mean?

Abnormal hba1c test result directly means that you have had an average higher blood sugar level for the past weeks or months.

If your hba1c result is above 6.5% and if you don’t have Diabetes, you will be diagnosed as Diabetes.

If a person with Diabetes has hba1c higher than 7%, it means that your Diabetes is not controlled well. You and your health provider will make a target hba1c level to manage your Diabetes. The higher your hba1c test result, the higher chances you have in getting the following complications of Diabetes:

☆Diabetic retinopathy

☆Foot disease

☆Heart disease

☆Nerve damage

☆Kidney disease

If your hba1c test result stays high over long periods of time, the chances of getting those problems will be even higher. It is advised that Diabetics do hba1c test for every three to six months.
