What Does Proteinuria Mean for Kidney Stone Patients

Proteinuria may indicate kidney damages for kidney stone patients. In many cases, kidney stone causes no kidney problem, but if the kidney stone is large enough and meanwhile it lodges in the kidney, the patients will have high risk of developing proteinuria.

Proteinuria is manifested as lots of small bubbles in urine. These bubbles do not disappear within limited time and are caused when protein get out of our body with urine. Mostly, proteinuria appears when kidney stone causes damages of glomerular filtration membrane which is in charge of filtering blood. Protein exist in blood and in normal cases, they can not pass through filtration membrane. However, once this membrane is damaged, it fails to keep protein in our body. Consequently, proteinuria is formed.

Proteinuria is one of the typical symptoms of kidney damages. For people with kidney damages caused by kidney stone, aside from proteinuria, they may also experience blood urine, high blood pressure, tiredness, poor appetite, poor concentration, nausea, vomiting, anemia and so on. These symptoms do not appear at the same time, and they usually occur one by one with the progression of kidney disease.

For kidney stone patients, proteinuria always indicates kidney function has been impaired. In that case, if they do not not prevent further kidney damages, they will be at high risk of developing end stage kidney failure which needs patients to do dialysis or kidney transplant. Therefore, being alert when proteinuria occurs is very necessary.

For patients with small kidney stones, they can drink more water and do some physical exercises in daily life as these measurements can help them pass kidneys tone easier. For people with big kidney stones, they need to take some medications to dissolve or pass kidney stone, in case of the occurrence of kidney damages.

Not everyone with kidney stone and proteinuria is certainly living with kidney damages, but they are at high risk. Therefore, do not make little of proteinuria if you are a kidney stone patient.
